Greetings Woodsballers!
We are happy to report that the WCPL's first event of the 2023 season - Promoter Fred Schultz's Southern California Classic - has reached a successful, fun-filled and interesting conclusion.
The Final Standings for this event were decided in a three team round-robin, with Dynasty Old School, OG Ironmen and Los Angeles Ironmen facing off. At the finish -
1st Dynasty Old School
2nd OG Ironmen
3rd Los Angeles Ironmen
Remaining places as determined by preliminary round-robin play:
4th Live Wire (459 pts)
5th Washington Winstons (438 pts)
6th Black Sunday (371 pts)
7th Fatal Swoop (335 pts)
8th Toxic Teddys (297 pts)
9th Brain Dead Chaos Factory Team (268 pts)
10th Defy Factory (183 pts)
Games are based on a 100 point scoring system; a "perfect" performance during preliminary play would have netted a team 900 points. As is evidenced by the scores, no one had a perfect event, which is exactly what you see when the teams are well-matched. (Individual game outcomes can be found below, sourced from www.PBLeagues.com).
Promoter Fred Schultz reported after the event that the weather on Saturday was cold, but teams persevered and were rewarded with fantastic weather on day 2. Two fields were in play at Glen Forrester's Ambush Paintball Park. Officiating was solid and the event really only had one minor incident, a player shooting at Gary Baum's drone, which Gary pointed out in a Facebook post violated a federal regulation, though he has graciously chosen not to pursue the matter. (Thank you Gary)
Reports from the field began coming in on Facebook almost immediately after the event, with players and teams stating that they had a wonderful time both on the field and off the field.
Scores were regularly updated via PBLeagues.com and replicated both on the WCPL's Facebook group and the WCPL website's blog.
Some teams have also been contacted with requests for additional imagery, Gary Baum of PaintballPhotography announced that his photos from the event will be available for viewing in about a week.
Side Note: A lot of players should be cautioned to not use the number of teams attending an event to gauge its success. Rather, the quality of the event, as well as the team's satisfaction with things like scheduling,. officiating, field design and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to successfully combine good competition AND good fun on and off the field should be the primary considerations. The 2023 Southern California Classic went a long way towards demonstrating that all of those elements are in place - professional organization, smooth running and good times had by all - not to mention a greater online presence - as we move forward during the season. Teams are already discussing their attendance at the upcoming Florida Panhandle Classic, which will take place at Panhandle Paintball (Dan Colby, Steve Preskill) on April 1st and 2nd. Other teams are contemplating attendance at the upcoming New York Classic (Paintball Sports NY - Jerry Braun, Kevin Donaldson) taking place on June 9th, 10th, 11th. Day 1 for field walking.).
As reactions are received, we'll be putting them up on the website, Facebook and the blog.
